TFSR Practical help for practical people

Tools for Self Reliance has played a vital role in the provision of training and tools for communities in South Rwenzori Diocese. For more information on this worthwhile project, visit the TFSR home site.

To date, the program has been operating in the parishes of All Saints, Kilembe (KWOD) and St. Paul's Cathedral (SPWOD), Hima parish (HWOD) and has benefited a number of people across Kasese district. So far, the emphasis is being put on carpentry and joinery and tailoring. Since the commencement of this program in South Rwenzori Diocese in 2006, hundreds of young people, both male and female, have benefited by receiving secondary education and beyond.

Incubator Project

After several years of partnership and with the growing demand for quality workmanship, it became necessary that the quality of our trainees be upgraded so as to produce graduates who would be able to effectively meet the growing demands on the job market. Therefore, another program called the Incubator Project has been initiated.

Under this program, some of the graduates who successfully go through their elementary studies (here, the trainees are only equipped with skills in carpentry, joinery and tailoring) go for another phase, whereby they are exposed to more practical training and theory. We are yet in the elementary stages of this program and it is agreed that its duration will be 1 1/2 years. It is hoped that after this phase, the trainees will be better equipped to meet the increased demands on the market.

Under this agreement, Romsey Deanery, through the Tools for Self Reliance-UK, provides tool kits for each and every apprentice in this program, plus giving them a starter grant of Ugsh 30,000 (£ 10). This would enable them to have a starting point in life as they have no other source of income. In addition, students in this program are exposed to other training in marketing, produce and quality control, management, finance and bookkeeping. Awareness on health related issues is also created by engaging a health expert.
