South Rwenzori Diocese
Projects and Programmes

Alongside its spiritual purpose, the Diocese has a broad social development involvement in the communities of Kasese District including health, education and environmental projects.

The Mothers' Union

Messiah Radio

The Diocese established Messiah Radio 97.5 FM to broadcast predominantly in local languages. 55% of programmes are in Lhukonzo, and 20% in Rutoro. The radio station is a vital communication centre for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and is used by Government and social workers to sensitize the 250,000 listeners on health issues, governance, education, trade, childcare and family life.

Expansion of Messiah Radio     Messiah Radio installed a new transmitter in the Rwenzori Mountains. The coverage now extends to reach almost 3.5 million people, up from the half a million people last year. Read more.

Health

Campaigns against the spread of HIV/AIDS, and Malaria are in full gear through; education and information, promotion of safe practices and procedures, voluntary testing and counseling, and access to health care services.

Program in support of Kagando Hospital Nurses

The nursing staff at Kagando Hospital often have large families, and support additional relatives and orphans on small salaries. A program was set up to provide support for 58 such staff members. For more information on this program, click here.

Establishment of Health Centres

The diocese has been very active in establishing some 13 health centres in surrounding parishes. These centres provide basic health care, as well as HIV/AIDS testing and counseling. Three of them treat opportunistic diseases; two of the three have developed community outreach programmes to deal with HIV/AIDS, malaria prevention, and issues related to pregnancy and delivery.

HIV/AIDS Coordination

Methods of outreach include movies and live dramas, as well as personal testimonies from people who are HIV-positive. These are presented at large community gatherings, trade centers and seminars. There are also programmes reaching out to communities of HIV-positive victims – People Living With AIDS (PLWAS), training caregivers in home care and treatment.

Young And Powerful Initiative Project (YAPI)

This project is targeted at HIV/AIDS awareness within the community, facilitating voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). Its mission is to improve services for the young people's reproductive health. Click here to read more about this project.

Malaria Prevention

Health Centres sponsor outreach programs to the local communities, stressing the importance of mosquito nets, and provides testing kits. This part of the world is home to the most deadly form of malaria, and it is the number one killer in the country. The largest number of fatalities are children under the age of five, and the elderly.

Clean Water

The diocese is very involved in trying to establish clean water systems for various parishes. A project is underway at this time to provide water piped from the Rwenzori mountains to an area of Kasese. Wells have been dug in some places, and solar powered pumping systems have been installed in a few small villages. The rate of water-borne illness has dropped significantly following installment of clean water systems.

Youth Discipleship Program

The Youth Training Team is working to create a unique discipleship programme to guide and support the youth of the diocese. The programme is unique because it is been created entirely locally, with input from the youth themselves, and a wide section of the faith community. The programme has had a very positive response from the youth because it responds to their personal questions and challenges in a way which is easily accessible and culturally sensitive. There are currently two full-time members of staff - Mr. Dave Renno and Captain Aasanasio Kainja. The work began in 2000 under Bishop Zebedee Masereka (retired) and continues under Bishop Jackson Nzerebende. Read more.

Environmental Issues

Loss of forests is a serious issue in Africa, the trees having been cut to provide firewood for cooking fires and for building. The South Rwenzori Diocese has planted large tracts of trees in some of the mountainous areas, as well as in parts of Kasese. (The photo is of the hillside just above the new cathedral. A larger tract of trees is planted on the other side of the hillside.)

Most all of these projects are graciously supported, in large part, by funds provided by churches and organizations who partner with the diocese in providing basic services to communities in need.

As time goes on, we hope to provide information on all of the programs which are run under the sponsorship of South Rwenzori Diocese, so that our partners may keep abreast of what is going on here. We encourage you to come back and visit these pages often, for updates and for more information on new as well as existing programmes.
