South Rwenzori Diocese Celebrates 22nd Anniversary

The Focus

The focus of the Anniversary is on the Christian Family.

The Christian Family begins with Christian Marriage. Thus, between 800-1000 couples are expected to wed in the church in August of 2006, alone, as part of the Anniversary Celebration.

Click here for some photos and stories about some of the parish mass weddings. This strategy falsifies the concept that one needs millions of shillings to wed; the Anniversary couples have not paid anything for their wedding services and ceremonies. An inexpensive lunch is offered by the churches at the wedding centres.

Expensive weddings have caused thousands of Christians to shy away from church marriages, since they are accompanied by big feasts at the reception. The Diocese of South Rwenzori will soon launch a campaign against expensive weddings.

Reasons

  • They cause increased poverty as people spend loan money on wedding parties for relatives and friends
  • Money should go into savings, investments and developmental expenses - e.g., education, health, etc.

Children

While the focus is on family, still child upbringing is another objective. Children will lead the Anniversary Service on August 27, 2006 at the cathedral. This is an opportunity for the Church to condemn domestic violence, child abuse, child labour, child neglect, etc.

An appeal will be made for children to obey God and their parents and to resist temptations that go with youthful life. They should also live a responsible life as a way of keeping themselves safe from sexually transmitted diseases.

Parents are to be reminded to bring up their children in the way of God. (Proverbs 1:7; 22:6)

As a Diocese, we must build the Human church (The children are the Church of tomorrow!) concurrently with the Cathedral Church building.

Importance of Christian Families

  • They are workshops for new human beings,
  • Families built on Christian principles produce citizens that serve under similar principles,
  • Such families are the foundation for a strong Church and a strong nation, free of corruption but full of patriotism.

The entire programme will disclose the role being played by the Church to promote wholistic and holistic life for its members and the communities of Kasese District.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

(Proverbs 1:7)

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

(Proverbs 22:6)
