Background Information

Kasese has been affected by wars almost since 1962. Therefore there has been a lot of destruction of both life and property. At times the wars have been seen as being political or tribal. This has caused a lot of ill feelings among people, especially the youth, men and the women. Mostly, men have been killed and the women left with no support and are homeless, helpless, and with orphans to look after, as well as with no income. The women have also found they cannot rely on their husbands to bring food, clothes, school fees and enough money for their children. Therefore, any effort to raise the income of women by giving them training in any activity for their enhancement and self sufficiency is a welcome and noble cause. Whereas women are the backbone of this country, they have for a long time been neglected. Women have great responsibility and must defend their status. More than 60% of Ugandans are women.

The task of promoting social change or transformation in the new Kasese cannot be left to the government alone. Base Camp United Christian Foundation is to be a pioneer in initiating and introducing new innovations for the enhancement of women, youth and men.

The Project

Base Camp United Christian Foundation is to establish a vocational training centre for both women and the youth in the urban area of Kasese. The training centre will be a day school for all categories of women including married and unmarried women, school dropouts, working women, men, and others who will be interested in the profession. The training centre will be equipped with staff to be recruited to conduct the training classes. Cultural back ground and religious practices have not favored the advancement of women in Uganda -- hence their lack of relevant education and early school dropouts for marriage and other activities. We also do realize that the present education system is not fully relevant and responsive to our needs; for instance, it can not help to exploit our natural resources, it does not create self-confident products, the education system seems to be ill equipped to respond meaningfully to our environment, yet our rural economy and urban development shall always depend on skilled and practical women and men who are self-confident and responsive to developmental needs of the majority of our people who live and work in the rural areas of this country. This vocational school shall cater for these needed skills and practical knowledge.

Base Camp United Christian Foundation has therefore decided to pioneer again in establishing an appropriate institution which will offer meaningful and relevant education to our national development needs. The organization's decision is to review and correct this imbalance with the present education system in order to offer meaningful and relevant training to our people.
